What is a SWOT analysis?

A SWOT analysis is commonly used in business to help a company identify current assets and areas for improvement. They include:

· Strengths

· Weaknesses

· Opportunities

· Threats

SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Strengths and weaknesses are internal factors. Opportunities and threats are external factors.

We offer a few resources that provide SWOT reports on select companies. Not all companies will have a report. Since these reports are a compilation of an analyst’s opinion, you should create your own analysis with other information you find.

Creating Your Own SWOT Analysis

Regardless of whether you have found a prepared SWOT report, you will want to supplement the information with other sources and create your own SWOT analysis. Here are some tips for gathering more information and creating your own SWOT report:

· Contact the company, if possible. Explain you are a student researching the company for an academic paper. Offer to sign a non-disclosure agreement. You might be surprised! If your company is a small private firm, secondary sources of information may be scarce and this may be the only way to get information.

· Look at the company’s competitors. Use the company’s NAICS code to find its competitors by industry and consider:

· How it differentiates itself from the others?

· What are your company’s competitive advantages?

· What services and products do its competition provide?

· Read the reviews. Search the company site and third party reviews for mentions of the company. Keep in mind that customer reviews can be unreliable and biased; however, consistently positive or negative reviews should be considered.

The most significant challenges in healthcare systems would be in its hierarchy. I kept in mind that different organizations in the healthcare systems may have a different approach for how that system is structured. Baptist Health differs from Methodist or Concentra to name a few organizations in healthcare. The challenges posed by hierarchies are especially true for military medicine. With new reforms to military health and structure, hospitals have had difficulty determining who in the hierarchy they should report. The Department of Health Agency (DHA) was established as the command and control for all healthcare governance, including funding. In this chain, one would assume that since DHA has oversight, the hospitals would report directly to them or follow specific guidelines and policies. Unfortunately, a separate hierarchy governs the personnel at military hospitals. This hierarchy is specific to the Army, Navy, or Airforce services. The military hospital essentially is pulled in two different directions and often has to report up to two chains rather than one. The individual hospital can operate day-to-day, but they are split in two regarding funding issues or personnel issues. You could imagine how this could cause conflict, and ultimately our stakeholders feel the pain. Some of the problems with hierarchical structures, such as the one seen in military health, is the hospitals don’t have much influence to solve the issues, and there is slow communication at different points in the structure. 


Where I think the greatest challenges to healthcare system lies would be with reilience and self-organization. My reasoning for thinking reilience is because it’s define as, ability to bounce, spring back into shape, position after being pressed or stretched (Meadows, D., & Wright, D., (2008). When relating reilience to the healthcare system what comes to mind is budget. With new and advance procedures/equipment, staff annually raises and having ready and available everyday supplies it can sometimes become a challenge for the system to take and as well have a balance feedback loop . Especially during this time maintaining a balanced feedback loop and or increasing feedback loop, it’s totally upon the inflow and maintaining stock and decrease outflows. At one time many healthcare systems were only doing emergent procedures, which had an effect and possibly hurt a balancing loops allowing the structure to not be as functional .

On the other hand when thinking of self organization, I’m thinking that it can be another challenge. I think of the complicity of self organization. When reading chapter 3 self organization is defined as the capacity of a system to make its own structure more complex (Meadows, D., & Wright, D. (2008). Although self organization brings a different way of doing things it can sometimes be a challenge within a healthcare system, due to it including an experiment. Self organization would include doing things a different way, kind of like trial and error. Doing things differently can sometimes give pushback from those who’s not open to change . Self organization could most definitely be an challenge for those couple of reasons .

In Week 2, you created a Systems Thinking Diagram that mapped the stock, inflows, outflows, and feedback loops of your organization. As you become more familiar with your environment and the relationships and interactions between departments and people, you will begin to discover existing strengths and weaknesses. The analysis of the weaknesses and threats to a system is essential during the initial phase to make operational improvements, and it will reveal existing opportunities to plan and execute effective solutions.

· Complete a preliminary walk around the organization to scan the environment for strengths, weaknesses, potential opportunities, and potential threats (e.g., workflows, products, personnel, processes). 

· Follow up with additional research that may provide clarity on elements that you are hesitant or indecisive to list. 

· Review your Systems Thinking Diagram from Competency 1 and determine if there are any details you can add or adjustments you can make to enhance your understanding of the organizational system. 

· Write an objective for your SWOT analysis. 

· List the organization’s strengths, weaknesses, potential opportunities, and potential threats. 

· Select and analyze the items that should be prioritized within your organization. 

· Complete the worksheet/table/cells attached below with a summary of your analysis of your organization of the 3 most important strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats facing your organization. Prepare a 350-word summary analysis of the 3 most important strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats facing your organization. 

· Analyze and discuss why you believe each is important.
